In a March 23, 2006 article, the Lowell Sun reported that Joe Espinola told the newspaper he had been working in construction while on injury leave from the Lowell Police Department. According to the article, the disclosure came during the newspaper's reporting on public employees holding second jobs while receiving injury-leave benefits.

Three years later, the Lowell Sun reported that Espinola had been granted an accidental disability retirement pension by the Lowell Retirement Board and the state Public Employee Retirement Administration Commission.
